I am often asked whether I know from the start what I want to create and which components will make up the sculpture. Very often, the answer is yes: from the beginning, I usually know what kind of fantastical creature or concept I want to express, even if it may evolve along the way. The components themselves, however, are never planned in advance. They come together gradually during the making process, depending on whatever happens to be at hand.
I find this element of chance both magical and precious. It makes every creation completely unique.
And the less inspiring the available material seems at first, the more it pushes me to go further and challenge myself. That is often when strange chimeras begin to emerge.
Below, you will find a few examples showing different stages in the creation of several sculptures.
